MIGROS: February 2023
Autonomous Logistics Takes Root
In February 2023, Migros and LOXO launched their joint project “Migronomous powered by LOXO”, marking the first driverless delivery application on public roads in Europe. The pilot project, carried out in Ebikon in the canton of Lucerne, represented a major milestone not only for Switzerland but for Europe as a whole. As part of the initiative, Schindler employees ordered their groceries online from Migros, a leading e-retailer. The groceries were then collected directly from the Migros store, loaded into the LOXO vehicle — the LOXO Alpha — and autonomously shuttled to the Schindler campus over a 500-meter route.
Operating in mixed traffic at speeds of up to 30 km/h, the vehicle relied on advanced sensors to continuously monitor its surroundings and navigate safely and emission-free. During the initial phase, operations were supervised by a teleoperator who could intervene whenever necessary to ensure the highest level of safety. With this project, LOXO and Migros demonstrated that autonomous delivery can already play a practical role in logistics today, while paving the way for a more sustainable, efficient, and emission-free future of mobility.
